A rollercoaster ride of emotions with unexpected punchlines and twists that left my mouth hanging open in awe... deftly weaves together comedy and raw, heart-wrenching anecdotes, eliciting both laughter and tears from the audience.

Jess Karamjeet is 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, Susan Kennedy.

But what exactly does this British Indian have in common with the matriarch of the show she’s watched since she was eight years old..?

Redundant Neighbours writer Jess Karamjeet explores what happened when life imitated art – when plucky dreams made way for dangerous schemes, and she found herself with something unexpected in common with her beloved, fictional mum.

Following the cancellation of Neighbours in 2022, Jess created REDUNDANT NEIGHBOURS WRITER DOES STAND-UP as an ode to the television show which inspired her to cross the world and chase her dreams.

Performed at Melbourne International Comedy Festival to nostalgic, homegrown audiences, the show recounted Jess’s experiences as a queer, experimental backpacker with a hidden disability… into the story Writers’ Room of her long-time guilty pleasure.

‘REDUNDANT’ NEW ZEALAND INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL

Jess Karamjeet had plans - ambitious ones and downright evil ones - but lately she feels redundant. Her dad died and she’s in the queer dating-pool again after four years. There’s also the tiny issue of being a writer and performer with men like Mayor Brown skulking around...

But Jess is fighting! ‘Redundant’ is a rally cry for creatives, misfits and contradictory humans: an hour of stand-up and songs navigating grief, queer and bi-racial identity, and the taboo powers of hidden disabilities.

An adapted, Kiwified version of REDUNDANT was performed at Basement Theatre as part of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival 2023 to rave reviews, succeeding in Jess’s aim to inspire and encourage more unheard voices into comedy and screenwriting.

The refreshingly raw and unfiltered way Karamjeet shares her experiences as a pan-sexual woman creates a safe and intimate space for the audience. It feels like I am given a pep-talk by the older sister I never had, or that I am at a slumber party with a close friend, where anything goes and nothing is off-limits.
